South Africa welcomes new Minister of Tourism

On 29th of May 2019 South Africa welcomed new Tourism Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane who took over the Department of Tourism from Derek Hanekom who led the department since March 2018. Our concern is, how can there ever been made combined efforts of Lifesaving organizations and the Tourism Department to reduce coastal drowning of tourists if ministers change on such short notice (four ministers in a period of five years!). But more than that, we fear little to be expected from the new Ministry when we read this:

Moreover, there are numerous government-sponsored tourism websites which have been left to wreck and ruin due to the government’s lack of maintenance, upgrades and lack of political will. The DA urges the department to rather upgrade these websites and [make] it attractive for tourists to visit,” says De Freitas.

Anyway, here you can read, as a reminder to whom it may concern, our plea to sensitize the tourism industry in South Africa to take measures for improvement of safety education and practices amongst beach users in order to raise awareness about the dangers of the oceans around South Africa.
