Shark attack claims 8th life in the last five years at Second Beach in Port St Johns

An Austrian tourist who was traveling with a  tour group also including his wife, was killed in a shark attack. The 72-year-old victim was cooling off in shallow water just a few meters from the crowded beach when he was dragged into the sea. He was swimming with three others, including his wife. There were three lifeguards on the beach but they were not on duty. They watched helplessly while the man was fighting for his life.

Praag.org titles "Corruption turns beach into world's deadliest" and writes that the money intended to renew the contracts of lifeguards goes instead to fund expensive lifestyles and German cars.

On 12th of April the Daily DIspatch E_Edition titles: "Fears grow for Port St Johns holiday bathers." Safety of swimmers is a concern of Port St Johns Municipality during Easter holidays, after eight fatal shark attacks in five years, but "it is virtually impossible to ban bathing" says Local Mayor Mnyamezeli Mangqo. Department of Environmental Affairs communications director Zolile Nquayi denies lack of interest.
